Subject: TIGERS CLAW TO 2-0

Greetings to all!

I am proud to report that the St HOPE flag football team has reached 2-0 after a 25-14 victory this past weekend over Mott Hall II.

After a rough two days of practice this past week full of dropped passes and countless “restorative” sprints, the Tigers came out hungry. St HOPE’s aerial assault was on full display, led by blossoming signal caller Luis Garcia and seasoned veteran receiver Amere’ Johnson. Johnson led the squad with two long catches, one of which resulted in the game-sealing touchdown.

Other strong contributions came from first year student-athlete Mark Wilson, whose chain moving catch on 3rd and 10 allowed the Tigers to run out the remaining clock.

Defensively, the Tigers were guided by strong performances from Mamadou Kante, and honorary captain Matthew Wilson.

Fox and I are so pumped for this group of young men. If I remember correctly, this is the first time we have started the season 2-0 since 2016.

This week has been a much needed break from our children, but be sure to congratulate the football squad when you see them this coming Tuesday. And as always, hold them to the highest of standards.

Subject: Flag football game

Good evening all,

The St. Hope football team is officially 1-0 with a 13-6 win tonight led by a strong rushing attack from Brandon Brown. Defense again led the way with two interceptions one from Matt and the other by Louis. The boys made a strong goal line stand to start the second half which gave us the momentum to score the touchdown to put us up 7 for good. Strong start to the season with a lot of smiles.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Fox

Hey All,

Unfortunately our girls fell short 1 bucket against HVA East. The girl’s played a hell of a game and were very emotional at the end. Lady Tigers acquired 3rd place even after an undefeated season, so you can only imagine our pain. Please congratulate our girls with as much love and support on Monday. They can use some encouragement as we head into State Exams.

Subject: St. HOPE Soccer May 13, 2018

St. HOPE Boys and Girls Soccer Teams faced an uphill battle with a significant number of players on the Virginia and DC field trip. The boys managed a 2-2 tie to maintain their undefeated record with 2 wins and 3 ties. The girls were not so fortunate bringing their record to 3 wins and 2 losses. This upcoming weekend there will be 5 players from each team participating in all star weekend. This will give both teams some much needed extra practice time before they finish out the last few weeks of the regular season.

Subject: St. HOPE Girls Soccer May 5, 2018

St. HOPE Girls Soccer Team improved their record to 3-1 with a 5-0 victory over Manhattan East in a battle of teams tied for second place. Spaain Johnson was named woman of the match by Asphalt Green and will be highlighted in this week’s newsletter. She dominated the midfield and added 3 goals to her great defensive effort. Rahmat Showa added two goals after also scoring two goals last week. Destiny Torres earned her second shutout in the last two games to keep Manhattan East off the scoreboard. The girls are now in a two way tie with PS 161 who they will play later on in the season as they try to keep pace with an undefeated Mott Hall 2 who beat us 1-0 in the second week of the season.

Keep your eyes out for the newsletter which I will forward to everyone on Thursday.

Hope you can come out to support our girls as we continue our climb to the top of the table.

St. HOPE Soccer Teams Are back in action on Saturday. Both teams are near the top of the standings and are missing several players due to the field trip. They could each use your support. Both matches start at 8 pm at Asphalt Green on the corner of 90th and York.

Please check out the nice write up on the girls team and the MVP of the Week Honors that went out to Spaain Johnson.

Subject: Tigers face toughest opponents yet 5-8-18

The Tigers softball team took two tough losses over the last two days bringing our record to 2-4.

On Monday we faced the more experienced and 1st Place team, MS 343. Our girls we a bit intimidated and struggled to settle in and get their bats going, resulting in a 15-0 loss after 2.5 innings.

This afternoon we faced off against Girls Prep BX, who also has several more experienced players. Jaylynn looked strong on the mound with 2 strikeouts. Jadel is really developing as a catcher and made 3 outs behind the plate. Kaitlyn continues to be solid at first base and Angel came through with a big fly out in the 2nd inning. We again struggled on offense, but Angel and Jassy each had big hits in the bottom of the 4th. Unfortunately it was not enough to keep us alive and the game ended for us after the 4th inning and with a score of 13-0.

Shoutout to Greenspan for being only the 2nd staff member to come out to a St HOPE softball game (and to Perez for being the first in the program’s first year)! Our next game is Tuesday, May 15th at McCabe park (120th and Park Ave).

Best,
Bernandez

Subject: Tough Loss to Health & Science 5-5-18

The softball team suffered a tough loss against Health & Science yesterday. At gametime we were missing 3 of our starting infielders which required us to make some last minute changes and led to a nervous first inning in which we allowed 4 runs. After that the girls settled in, and we ended the game with a 7-4 loss.

Destiny dominated the infield again with 9 strikeouts, a fly out and a line out. Jaylynn again proved her flexibility with solid play as our starting first basewoman and closing second basewoman.

At the plate, Adriany had a clutch hit in the 3rd that brought in 2 RBIs. Destiny went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI and we saw some great hits by Angel, Brianna V and Noemi this game as well.

We have back to back games this week on Monday and Tuesday. Both are at 4:30pm at Bill Rainey park in the Bronx which is just 4 stops up on the 2 train. Hope to see you there.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Subject: Zaymian foretells Tigers win 4-24-18

At recess today, Zaymian gave Ms. Berenback a tarot reading. When asked about how our game would go, he pulled the courage and triumph cards … and boy, was he right!

Jaylynn showed amazing courage today by pitching a full game in her debut on “the mound.” (She also displayed her usual high level of excellence by making it a shut out with a total of 10 strikeouts in 4 innings!) As a result, we definitely triumphed over Bronx Lighthouse charter school with a 10-0 mercy rule win.

Jaylynn, Jassy and Jadel were our top offensive players, going 3 for 3 with 1 RBI, 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, respectively.

Please high five the girls, and Zaymian, tomorrow! Due to the Math exams, our next game is Saturday, May 5th.

Have a great evening,
Bernandez

Subject: Another exciting game of softball .. 4-23-18

The Tigers had another 5 nail-biting innings of softball this afternoon against BX Excellence. We were up 5-1 after the second, but a number of nervous errors and big hits by BX Excellence led to the score being tied at 6 by the end of the 4th inning. They scored two in the 5th, so we came to our last at-bats down by two. We were unfortunately unable to catch up after a solid double play by our opponents, ending the game 8-6.

Our strongest gloves of the game go to Jaylynn Cortes, Jassy DeJesus and Isabella Espinal. Jaylynn had a strong showing in her first innings at 1B and continued her solid play when moved over to 2B. Isabella has been showing her versatility by starting today’s game at 2B after playing SS and 3B last week, and handling each like a veteran. Jassy showed true leadership at SS, stopping everything hit to her and backing up her teammates.

Our strongest bats of the game were Angel Shaw, who went 1 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs and Jaylynn Cortes who went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Please congratulate all of the girls tomorrow and join us at 4:30pm at Bill Rainey Park as we take on Lighthouse. The field is in the Bronx but its only about 5 stops up on the 2 train and the girls would love your support.

Have a great night,

Bernandez

Subject: Frigid temps can’t stop the Tigers! 4-17-18

Tigers softball took a W in their first game this afternoon against Atmosphere, in an exciting 5 innings and despite the bitter cold. We led by 3 after the second, but ended up down by 1 in the last inning when Jadel had a big hit with 2 RBIs to win the game.

Destiny had her usual strong showing on the mound with 11 strikeouts and 2 fly outs, as well as going 3 for 3 at bat. Jaylynn also went 3 for 3 and made a big out at 2nd base to close the top of the 4th inning. Jadel’s game winning hit was also her 3rd for 3 (in her first gamell, and she shows great promise behind the plate.

All of the girls are off to a great start and we look forward to a strong season. Please congratulate them tomorrow and come out to our next game on Monday to cheer them on!

Hi everyone!!

Thank you so much to those who stopped by. The support means so much to the girls and us.

The varsity team played the best game they’ve played since we started the program at St HOPE.

We had strong serving from Jade, Noemi and Brigette, each earning us between 4-9 points.

The movement on the court was non-stop. It seemed wherever Fanta was, serves were coming her way. She did an excellent job staying alert and returning the ball. Mia and Yessenia had strong showings moving to attack the ball and handle some really tough serves. Suwaiba killlled it when calling balls and smacking the heck out of them. Brianna went from tears to earning two points breaking through her anxiety. Jade & Noemi ontinued to demonstrate why they’re captains as they motivated girls throughout the tough calls.

There were countless plays where our girls passed the ball to one another, which was our biggest goal this season.

Although today is a loss in the scorebooks, we had the opportunity to demonstrate our character, team work and sportsmanship. We’ll make that down as a big ol’ W.

The final score was 42 to 50 (if both games are combined).

Huge shout out to Greenspan as well. He really has taken on the lead coach roll, and has been patient teaching me more about the sport. Today was my first day recommending substitutions, placements and lineup, and I really appreciate that he’s continued to coach me on how to be a better coach. Greenspan, you’re amazing!

Thank you again for the support throughout our season.

Stay tuned for a staff versus student volleyball announcement!

Hi all!

First and foremost… shout out to Greenspan for holding it down! Two games solo this week. I appreciate you holding the girls accountable and cheering them on.

results:
Varsity—tie (won first, lost second)
Junior Varsity—won!

The cell service in rural Missouri isn’t great (shocker) so I couldn’t clearly see who did what on the court, but I certainly could HEAR it! The girls sounded much more supportive and optimistic today.

Shout out to Adja and Aziza for FaceTiming me in to watch.

Please congratulate the girls & Greenspan on a job well done tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a great much deserved break!

Good evening!

We just returned from our away game.

Results:
Varsity-Loss
Junior Varsity-Tie

Our girls started off strong, despite being away and showing some nerves. After a couple missed swings and wonky serves, the girls nerves took over and they began to fall far behind. They were 10-23 when the other team called a time out. We regrouped, danced out our nerves, and screamed a little bit to get in the zone. The girls managed to come back 23-25. Despite the loss, this was the best they’ve played. Noemi was the MVP with unparalleled serving and communication, Fanta following her up with a near perfect underhand serve.

After the first match, there were some tears from nerves & the girls did a great job supporting one another and getting back into the zone.

Our JV team had excellent movement. Adja continued to dominate her serving & Janay was ready to attack the ball from anywhere on the court. Pretty & London were vocal and supportive of their teammates when on and off the field.

This was a tough loss for the team. Even though the two teams were evenly matched in skill, our nerves got the best. The other team did a great job chanting and cheering to support each other after a successful or missed swing. This was something our girls caught onto. We stayed after the game and made up chants, cheers, dances and Fanta is working on a “hype playlist” to share with the team.

Even though in the formal playbook this is an L, we decided it’s a W overall because we got to see a successful team and took some advice from them.

Our next game is home on Tuesday! We hope to see you there.

Best,
Greenspan, Mayhew & the team

Hi all!

Thank you to Soucy, Dumas, Clarke, Wang, Li, Persenaire, Delma, Lee and Mejias for stopping by today! (If I missed you, my apologies, the gym was paaacked).

Today’s Results…
Varsity: tied!
JV: won!

Our varsity team demonstrated significant growth. Notably captains Noemi (for mastering all parts of the court) & Jade (who is learning to serve overhand). Brianna and Aziza were great at movement. Jade also stepped up to coach the new to varsity players. We WON our first match, 27-25. We were off to a strong lead with Fanta & Noemi’s serves bringing in 6 points each. The other team made a quick rebound with A strong server. With Noemi up, we took it from 25-25 to the winning point. In the second match, Mott Hall 2 brought better served and walked away with the W. The overall result is a TIE. Which the girls were rightfully stoked about.

When JV took the court there was clear apprehension. We started off with a couple missed serves & the girls got their second wind from Jahdia cheering on Pretty. Pretty took it from there and SMASHED the ball over the net. From there Adja absolutely dominated her serving, bringing in 11 points. Janay did an excellent job moving to the ball and being aggressive enough to start sliding for it. The JV team WON their game!

The students and team rushed the court to celebrate.

It was a truly memorable day. The girls were very nervous (for those who saw last years team, you probably know why). Their communication skills and team support have grown immensely. Our serving game is on the up and up and we’re passing the ball.

Our next game is Thursday, away, at MS324.

Thanks for the support today!!
Greenspan & Mayhew

Sep 26, 2019

Good morning,

The volleyball team has our first home game of the season today against Mott Hall 2.

The game starts at 4:30 for Varsity. JV will follow. Please feel welcome to stop by and spread some joy!

We hope you have a good day,
Greenspan & Mayhew
